Fernando is originally from Mexico City, where he studied piano with Nestor Casteñeda and Humberto Hernández Medrano, and performed with Orquestra Sinfónica del Estado de México. He moved to New York City in 1987, where he continued his studies with Richie Beirach and bassists Rufus Reid and Ron McClure. He has been part of The Collective since 1988.
